5 Fandom Friday: Fandom Habits

It is time for another 5 Fandom Friday! Just joining us for 5 Fandom Friday for the first time? Catch up with all of our past posts here and read the 5 Fandom Friday origin story here.

Today’s topic is Fandom Habits, and I wasn’t quite sure which way to go with it. But the nice thing about Fandom Friday is that different bloggers put their own spin on the topics, so here’s mine!

Order66

#5 – Anti-66 (Star Wars)

While some people have superstitions about the number 13 or the number 666, I don’t like to use the number 66. I don’t have any superstitions about the number – I know Stormtroopers won’t come barging in my door if I set the thermostat to 66 degrees Fahrenheit, nor am I sentencing hundreds of Jedi to death in a galaxy far, far away – but I don’t like what the number reminds me of. Yes, it’s silly, and I recognize that. I also don’t propose that anyone pick up this little habit. But don’t be surprised when I scroll right past 66 in…basically any setting.

TheWayIsShut

#4 – The Way Is Shut (LOTR)

Do you ever find yourself trying to open a door and discovering it is locked? Or trying to open a window that is stuck? Or coming across one of those pesky doors that is a façade only? Well when I do, I always say, “The way is shut. It was made by those who are Dead, and the Dead keep it,” and usually convince everyone around me that I’m a disturbed individual.

StLucia'sDay_Kirsten'sSurprise

#3 – Saint Lucia’s Day (American Girl)

I read the American girl books when I was a kid, and even though my family is of Norwegian descent and not Swedish, I adopted Kirsten’s tradition of celebrating Saint Lucia’s Day! Every year since I was about 10 years old, I would make sweet rolls for my family on December 13. When I was younger, I got dressed in the traditional garb (or as close as I could get) and wake everyone up really early saying, “Saint Lucia invites you to breakfast!” Nowadays, I show up at whatever time I want, dressed how I want. But sometimes I still say the words!

TolkienFeastWeek

#2 – Tolkien Feast Week (LOTR)

In 2013, Middle-earth News kicked off the tradition of Tolkien Feast Week, and it has been a special week for me ever since. Feast week always starts on September 22, which is Frodo and Bilbo’s birthday and the day that Frodo leaves Bag End to begin his quest. Then we follow the hobbits all the way to Bree, eating meals inspired by what they ate on their journey. From year to year, it has been fun to discover how different people use the same general requirements and come up with interesting and yummy meals! This is a tradition I advocate for, so if you love Tolkien, why not join in this year?

Hamilton

#1 – Word Association (Musicals)

If I had a superpower, it would be the ability to associate any word with a song. And then sing it. Often to the annoyance of those around me. “Indubitably” always kicks off a round of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, “Yes, sir” means Rock Island from The Music Man, and pretty much any word ever used in the musical Hamilton gets belted out enthusiastically. Yep, I’m a real joy to be around.

What fandom-related traditions and habits do you have? Mine are all a bit quirky, so you don’t have to be embarrassed about sharing yours in the comments below!

hmm, i guess the only fandom-centred habit i regularly do is ‘there’s a star trek episode about this, where…’

other things i quote occasionally, but less regularly. (‘apology accepted… captain needa’, ‘wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey’, ‘do, or do not. there is no try’, ‘wax on, wax off’, ‘a surveillance camera?’, ‘it’s dangerous to go alone. take this.’)
